2015_Day 250: Reflecting on our first year in Texas

There was a lot of unpacking to do after a cross-country move.

There was a lot of unpacking to do after a cross-country move.

It’s hard to believe we’ve lived in Texas a full year now. So much has changed for all of us. New jobs for me and my husband, and new school for daughter. New friends all around. I had no idea what to expect when we moved here, and some things have been easier than others.

2015_Day 224: Fun at Schlitterbahn

The tube floats were our favorite thing to do.

The tube floats were our favorite thing to do.

The people of Texas have figured out how to beat the heat — or at least how to tolerate it and have fun at the same time. It’s called Schlitterbahn Waterparks – and there are four of them in Texas (one in Kansas, too). I was lucky to get some time off work, so I took daughter and step-daughter for a day of fun in the water Monday. Continue reading

2015_Day 220: I’ll take tax-free holiday

Daughter and I spent Friday evening shopping for school supplies and clothes. She has been working so much I’ve barely gotten a chance to see her, but she finally got a few days off and jumped at the chance to go shopping with me when I told her Friday was the start of a three-day, tax-free weekend — and I was buying. 2015_Day 211: Pink is for pretty darn perfect

I’m constantly amazed at the colors of the flowers in my backyard. Today it was the pinks that made my day. It was one of those days — work was busy and exhausting, only to come home to find that husband and daughter had left for their night jobs without taking care of seemingly simple tasks. No one likes chores (why would they right?), but it seems only fair that everyone share the load. Well, not this week in this house. A little bit peeved, I stepped outside to find something to distract myself with. It didn’t take long. Continue reading

2015_Day 195: Migraines a lifelong battle

When I was a young girl, maybe 10 or 12, I went to a friend’s birthday party. I was so excited to spend the afternoon away from the farm with no mom or dad, brothers or sisters. I remember getting dressed, the ride to her house, the anticipation of playing party games, drinking Kool-aid and eating cake and ice cream. I don’t recall going to a lot of kids’ birthday parties that weren’t for my five siblings, so this was special. Not for long though. I couldn’t have been there for more than an hour or two when my friend’s mom had to call my mom to come pick me up; I had a splitting headache that was so bad I was throwing up. Continue reading

2015_Day 178: Tenacious and sometimes slightly annoying

Oh, the joys of raising a strong-willed daughter. Mine, she is unwavering in her persistence to get what she wants. It’s like it’s a game with her — and she doesn’t plan on letting anyone else win. Continue reading

2015_Day 171: Saturday showers and shining stars

Four months after originally planning to visit the monthly Fredericksburg Trade Days, husband and I finally made it there. It was a rain-soaked trip but worth it. The drive into Hill Country alone almost made the trip worth it and made me wish we had found the time to do it during peak wildflower season. Continue reading

2015_Day 163: It’s finally time to start decorating my walls

This antique clock is the one purchase I've made for the walls of our house.

This antique clock is the one purchase I’ve made for the walls of our house.

I’ve moved into four different homes in the past 17 years, and each time I’ve taken the same approach to decorating the walls. I live in the house for a fair amount of time before I start pounding holes in the walls — to give myself time to understand how I feel about the house. Continue reading

2015_Day 159: A big, beautiful Wisconsin garden

Visiting my parents in Wisconsin was nice in many aspects, including that I got to see my mom’s big, beautiful garden. From flowers to vegetables, she’s got it all covered. Continue reading

2015_Day 158: Breathing new life into old treasures

My mom makes the most of old household items. She turned both an old toilet bowl and the high chair that was used by me and most of my siblings into planters. Continue reading
