I was looking at the memories section of my Facebook page today and was reminded of the beautiful crop of onions I harvested from my garden in 2011. They were white onions and they were big and flavorful. If I remember correctly, they lasted into December and provided an added seasoning for many meals. Continue reading
2015_Day 260: Pumpkin progress?

Wanda, my wandering pumpkin, continues to stretch out. She’s started trailing onto the grass, so I suppose I’ll have to try to train her to grow back into the raised bed soon. If I can’t, husband probably won’t like to mow around her.
How could he not like her, though, with her cute little pumpkins?

2015_Day 259: Tomatoes finally transplanted

I don’t know whether they’ll grow, but I finally got my fall tomatoes transplanted into the raised bed. There are three of the bigger variety, and those seem to have the best chance to grow. There are also three cherry tomato plants, but those were pretty much just stems when I moved them from pots to the raised bed. Continue reading
2015_Day 258: My (seemingly) weekly post of clouds

The clouds provided a most delightful drive home today. Low, high, dark, light, puffballs, wispy, they were all in prime form. The drops on my windshield didn’t get to be much more than that (there was a fair amount of blue sky among the clouds), although in some of the photos I took it looks like it was pouring somewhere. Continue reading
2015_Day 257: Pumpkin may be victim to squash vine borer

On the same day I spotted the first tiny little pumpkin growing on Wanda, my first-born fall pumpkin plant, I also discovered what I think must be the work of a squash vine borer. Continue reading
What if it was all up to you?
2015_Day 256: I read this blog post by former co-worker Warren Bluhm. Warren and I worked together at the Green Bay (Wis.) Press-Gazette for a time, he as the opinion editor, me as the online editor. I was constantly amazed at how forgiving he was of users (misusers, really) of our online forums.
He was always willing to give people a second chance and I admired that in him.
I liked this post from his blog, warrenbluhm.com, and wanted to share it. I am going to try to take his advice more often.
Thanks Warren.
What if we woke up and were not afraid, not sad, not meek, ready to do what needs to be done, to pursue happiness with life and liberty and vigor?
What if we woke up and the power to change our lives was in our own two hands?
What if we woke up and found the means to make today better – not just tomorrow, but today – with the past consigned to the past where it belongs?
What if we woke up and there was time for everything?
What if we woke up and fixed what needs fixing, learned what needs learning, and did what needs doing?
What if we woke up and there were no bucks to pass, just a certain knowledge that it’s up to each of us to make our lives better?
What if we woke up and no one was responsible for our lives but…

2015_Day 255: Seeing beauty in all stages of a flower’s lifecycle

I haven’t deadheaded any of my flowers lately because, well, I like to look at them through all stages of life. I know some of the zinnias and other flowers are all dried up. But I’ve watched them for weeks on end now, from being tiny seedlings to little buds to full flowers. So I think it’s only right that I keep a few of the “gray-haired” ones around, too! Continue reading
2015_Day 254: Pepper plant productive, just not pretty

The pathetic-looking pepper plant in my garden continues to produce tiny little peppers. I counted at least 13 little fruit on the plant, and there are more flower blossoms, too. Continue reading
2015_Day 253: More pumpkin flowers

Today I had a few minutes to check out the garden before work, and it was nice to see a lot of pumpkin flowers open. Also noticed that Wanda is expanding beyond the borders of the raised bed. Cosmo, the other pumpkin, is a lot smaller than Wanda, but he does have a flower or two.
When I got home tonight, I moved Wanda so she’s trailing inside the bed, but I’m guessing it won’t be long before she stretches out again. She’s definitely a pumpkin without borders, although I suppose that’s what pumpkins do, right?
Rain update: An hour after I posted last night about waiting for the rain, we actually did get a small shower. Less than a half-inch, but at least it’s something. There are more rain chances yet tonight and again tomorrow, but they’re really spotty.
2015_Day 252: Waiting on the rain

The potential for rain was promising, especially after hearing before work today that the Dallas area had gotten several inches. And it was headed our way. But, as it many times does, clouds that seemed like they could, would even, open up and delight us with a refreshing shower or three, didn’t. Not a drop. Continue reading
