2015_Day 191: Fabulous five days for seedlings

The difference in the seedlings in two days is unbelievable.

The difference in the seedlings in two days is unbelievable.

Seeds in 54 of the 72 peat pellets in my mini-greenhouse now have sprouted — just five days after they were planted. Still only a few of the lettuce seeds, but all of the tomatoes and most of the pumpkins and zinnias are peeking ou of the peat. A good week, I say. Pumpkins are growing so quickly that I’ll probably need to find a bigger pot for them this weekend. I’m thinking the tomatoes won’t be far behind. Continue reading

2015_Day 190: Seed sprouting shock and awe

Day 4: 52 of 72 of the pellets have at least one seedling in them.

Day 4: 52 of 72 of the pellets have at least one seedling in them.

My jaw dropped — again — when I looked at my mini greenhouse tonight. Just four days after planting four kinds of tomatoes, lettuce, pumpkins and three types of zinnias, sprouts are showing in 52 of the 72 peat pellets. Continue reading

2015_Day 189: Purple, pinwheel and peppermint zinnias=pinnias

Red cherry tomato seedlings (far left) and pumpkin seeds ( bottom row, middle) popped up three days after being planted.

I love watching seeds sprout through the dirt, or through the peat moss, as in my case. Tonight, just three full days after I pushed the seeds into peat pellets, more than 20 of the 72 pellets have seedlings popping up out of them, up from about eight last night. The new sprouts include red cherry tomatoes, pumpkins and the peppermint zinnias. Continue reading

2015_Day 188: Fastest sprouting seeds ever

The purple zinnias are sprouting!

The purple zinnias are sprouting!

Well, that’s a record, at least for me. Two days after I planted seeds in the peat pellets, the first flowers have popped up. Yep, only two days after I planted them, purple zinnias are sprouting, along with a few pinwheel zinnias. I have never had seeds sprout that fast. Of course, the peat pellets are sitting in a mini greenhouse on my patio and it’s been in the low 90s the past two days. Plus, it only got down to about 78 or 79 overnight. Continue reading

2015_Day 187: A few new flowers for the containers

Purple and pink vincas have replaced the petunias in this container.

Purple and pink vincas have replaced the petunias in this container.

Over the weekend, I found some holiday flower sales and figured it was a good time to brighten up the containers on my back patio. One of them in particular had really gone downhill, I suspect because it had too much water. Not that we’ve gotten a ton of rain lately, but unfortunately the downpours we did get waterlogged the one container and it just didn’t want to drain. Continue reading

2015_Day 186: Prep work underway for fall garden

It seems weird planting seeds for a fall crop. I love Texas!

It seems weird planting seeds for a fall crop. I love Texas!

When I planted my tomatoes back in March, I figured they’d be toast by early July. But they’re doing pretty good thanks to a cooler spring and early summer. There still are a lot of flowers on the bushes, not to mention fruit, so I’m hoping that they’ll keep producing for another couple weeks, despite little rain and upper 90s in the forecast. And, because one of gardening bibles (it’s okay to have more than one, right?), “Month-by-Month Gardening in Texas,” told me to, I planted seeds for a fall crop today, too. Continue reading

2015_Day 185: Fight against birds goes on

I hate to jinx it, but I think I might slowly be gaining ground in my fight against the birds pecking at my tomatoes. I’ve only seen one bird in the netting since I put it up almost a week ago. I have seen birds on the backyard fence, and there are a few tomatoes near the area that’s easiest for them to get to, but they do appear to be leaving the others alone. Continue reading

2015_Day 184: I want my own fixer-upper project

Thursday nights on HGTV are set aside for “Fixer Upper,” hosted by Chip and Joanna Gaines, who take on home-renovation projects in or near Waco, Texas. Friday morning was set aside by me to pay a visit to Magnolia Market, Joanna’s shop in Waco that sells a lot of the furnishings you see on the show. I wasn’t disappointed. Continue reading

2015_Day 183: Where is 2015 going?

Zinnia, cosmos, daisy and marigold seeds are in these envelopes.

Zinnia, cosmos, daisy and marigold seeds are in these envelopes.

Can you believe that 2015 is officially half over? Seems like the year just started, right? I don’t know about you, but it’s been a pretty good first six months for me. The inside of my house is slowly coming together and is getting that lived-in feel. The outside, specifically the backyard, definitely has a lot more going for it than when we moved in and it was just a blank slate of green grass. A couple raised beds, a crape myrtle shrub/tree and several containers and hanging plants later, it feels a lot more like a backyard I would want. Continue reading

2015_Day 182: Dirt dries out quickly

What a difference a day makes. Even after almost 5 inches of rain in the last 72 hours, a walk around the raised beds tonight showed dry dirt. I’m still getting used to how fast the Texas heat dries dirt out, even when the humidity is pretty high (70 percent today). Continue reading
