2015_Day 41: A big stadium, a big win

IMG_0981High school football stadiums in Texas continue to amaze me. Tonight, daughter played soccer at Leander High School’s Bible Memorial Stadium. Continue reading

2015_Day 40: Barbecue like no other — Salt Lick style

The Salt Lick in Round Rock, Texas.

The Salt Lick in Round Rock, Texas.

We took sister and brother-in-law to the most amazing barbecue place this weekend — The Salt Lick in nearby Round Rock. From the moment we got out of the car and walked up the concrete path, we were taken in, literally, by the tantalizing smell of the smoky barbecue. Like sister said, if you weren’t hungry when you got out of the car, you were the moment you inhaled the smell. Continue reading

2015_Day 39: Rubber duckie go away, please

imageDreams are weird. And not real. But I hate it when one wakes me ups, my heart pounding because it seemed so real. Mine (I suppose like many others) usually coincide with something going on in my life. Most often they’ve revolved around my job. Many times they even combine in one dream people I’ve worked with in numerous places. Continue reading

2015_Day 38: Warmer days greet family visitors

imageSo excited. In about six hours, oldest sister and her husband will be here for a visit. Can’t wait to see them! The weather should be really nice for them — 70s early in the week followed by a few 50s and 60s. Much nicer than what they’ve been having in central Wisconsin — teens, a few 20s and even colder. 2015_Day 37: Lettuce is trying my patience

IMG_0937I’m not giving up on my lettuce, but I am starting to wonder if it will ever get big enough to eat. Planted it way back in December. Continue reading

2015_Day 36: “Plus-sized” model or plus-sized “model”?

Sports Illustrated #CurvesInBikinis ad.

Still not sure how I feel about the Sports Illustrated announcement that the swimsuit issue will feature an ad with a “plus-sized model.” A lot of people are praising the model, Ashley Graham, for embracing her curves, as well as Sports Illustrated for finally showing some “real” women. Continue reading

2015_Day 35: Ready for the next big change in life? I am

IMG_1436When I left my job in July, I was excited and a bit anxious about what lie ahead. I had worked for one media company or another all my adult life — I was a reporter, photographer, paginator, news editor, copy editor, online editor. You name it, I probably had done it in some capacity as a journalist over the years. But husband’s new job in thriving Austin, Texas, was giving me an opportunity to explore my career choices. Continue reading

2015_Day 34: Will junk email ever go away?

It's not this Spam that bothers me (I actually like it!), but the junk emails that clutter up my email box.

It’s not this Spam that bothers me (I actually like it!), but the junk emails that clutter up my email box.

During my recent job search, I signed up for a lot of job alerts via email. And along the way, I ended up with a lot of spam emails in my Junk folder. You know the kind — cheap auto insurance, attorneys, help for hair loss, help for my love life, etc. Continue reading

2015_Day 33: What’s up with traffic anyway?

I just don’t get interstate traffic, especially during rush hour. Because for the most part, it isn’t a rush. Some days it’s a maddening crawl. Other days, it’s stop and go. I understand the fits and starts when there are accidents or disabled cars. You have to slow down for emergency vehicles or to let traffic in when another lane is blocked. I don’t like it, but I understand.

2015_Day 32: Why are there so many crape myrtle varieties?

A Pink Velour crape myrtle. From thetreecenter.com

One of the first trees I noticed when we came to Texas was the lovely, flowering crape myrtles. Especially the ones with deep red- or pink-colored flowers. “I definitely want to plant one of those in my yard,” I remember thinking. Continue reading
