2015_Day 127: There’s no place like home

While I enjoy taking trips–even if they’re for work–the best thing about them is coming home. This week’s trip to the Chicago area eas no different. It was an exhilarating three days of meeting new people, learning more about the company I work for and team building. But you know what was better? Continue reading

2015_Day 126: Never too early to start thinking next year

Marigold seeds.

Marigold seeds.

I don’t usually think about saving seeds for next year in May, when flowers have barely started blooming. Then again, as I’ve come to understand, things are different in Texas. I was looking at the marigolds I had transplanted last week and noticed a few of the flowers were dried up, so I bent down to pick off those dried petals, pulling up the seeds attached to the stem. Continue reading

2015_Day 125: Will 3 days make a difference?

IMG_2216
When I left home Monday midday, the cosmos and zinnias in my three-tier bed were full of buds, so I can’t wait to see what they’ll be like when I return from my work conference Thursday night. It would be cool to see flowers in bloom. Continue reading

2015_Day 123: Food for the tomatoes, beans, peas

image
Feeding a garden something other than water is new to me, but I’m giving it a try. Today, I put a mix of nitrogen, phosphate and potash in the dirt near my tomatoes, beans and peas in hopes that the tomatoes might get bushier and something — anything — might come from the beans and peas that are left. Continue reading

2015_Day 120: A red tomato in April!

Look at the red (okay orange) tomato in my garden!

Look at the red (okay orange) tomato in my garden!

Another gardening first for me in Texas. One of my Early Girl plants has a tomato that is starting to turn red. Really! Continue reading

2015_Day 119: It’s all about the dirt

I finally got the chance to watch “DIRT! The Movie,” the DVD I won in a recent (well, kind of) giveaway by DirtNKids blogger and fellow gardener Shannon. Continue reading

2015_ Day 118: Veggies harder to grow this year

Caterpillars or some type of fruitworm loving on my tomatoes?

Caterpillars or some type of fruitworm loving on my tomatoes?

I didn’t expect growing vegetables to necessarily be easy here in central Texas. And it isn’t. Neither the peas nor beans seem to be thriving; in fact, the peas look like they’re burning up. At the same time, I’m not sure what’s wrong with the beans. Continue reading

2015_Day 117: Tomato flowers galore

Lots of splashes of yellow in the garden today. The cherry tomatoes, they are finally flowering.  Continue reading

2015_Day 116: Bubblegum, black cherry and pink champagne Sunday

Finally. The failed lettuce is gone from my patio containers, replaced by Black Cherry and Bubblegum Supertunias and Pink Champagne Ruby Grass. Continue reading

2015_Day 115: Flower repotting awaits

I’m giving up on the lettuce in pots on my back patio. Actually, I gave up on it awhile ago, I just haven’t done anything with the pots (photo below). That will change tomorrow when I replant the petunias (photo above) I got from Home Depot into them. Continue reading
