2015_Day 241: Another reason to like weekends

As if there weren’t enough reasons for me to like weekends, here’s another. The flowers on the purslane plant hanging on my patio are beautiful, but they usually are closed by the time I get home from work during the week. Continue reading

2015_Day 240: Late bloom on pepper a surprise

My pepper plant looks pathetic. It has for quite awhile now, but I keep watering it because the peppers were still growing and the wilting leaves didn’t seem to be an indication that the peppers wouldn’t keep growing. So imagine my surprise when I noticed one offshoot whose leaves don’t look like they’ve spent the day (er, weeks) under sunny skies in 90-something-degree heat. Continue reading

2015_Day 239: And then there was a flower

It sure doesn’t take long for pumpkin plants to flower. Just a day or two after I saw little curly Qs on Wanda, she now sports at least one flower. No, the flower hasn’t actually opened yet, but I can see the yellow. I know it’s there. I’ll just give it another day, maybe two, and I bet it will be open. Continue reading

2015_Day 238: Two tomatoes better than none

It’s a week after one of my downtrodden tomato transplants looked like it was getting its second wind, and guess what? Now there’s a second tomato plant that looks like it might be coming around, too! It would be wonderful if both keep growing, especially since one is a cherry and the other a big-tomato variety. Continue reading

2015_Day 237: I see a Wanda takeover in near future

It won’t be long before my wandering pumpkin takes over a second raised bed area in my garden. Yes, Wanda is growing by leaps and bounds. The phrase definitely describes Wanda to a tee, stretching (I’d say anyway) as much as a foot in the past five days. Continue reading

2015_Day 236: Got the itchy Monday blues

Going on three weeks and still battling this lovely rash that has decided my body is a good place to call home. Although the prednisone the doctor prescribed seemed to work for awhile, that ship has sailed. The big, itchy welts have been replaced by a lot more tiny ones — on a lot more if my body. Continue reading

2015_Day 235: Sunday stretch

Wanda the wandering pumpkin keeps stretching out a couple inches a day as evidenced in the above photo, which shows the pumpkin Friday night (bottom) and Sunday night (top). I love having a physical marker to make comparisons — in this case I use the edge of the cage holding the pepper plant at far left. I sure hope it stays healthy.

Also starting on the pumpkins are the cute little curly Qs. I am so looking forward to oven-roasted pumpkin seeds this fall.

2015_Day 234: Saturday snapshots

A few random photos on this late August Saturday — Wanda the wandering pumpkin stretches out more each day, plus marigolds and zinnias whose flower power remains strong through the dog days of summer. Continue reading

2015_Day 233: Friday flashback to tomatoes, sunflowers

imageYou know why I talk about tomatoes so much? It’s because I love them a lot and in previous gardens, I’ve always been able to grow a lot of them. So when I came across this photo I posted on Facebook a couple years ago, I knew I had to share it. It was on this day in 2013 that I posted it, giddy that I was finally getting pails full of tomatoes in one picking. Continue reading

2015_Day 232: Tomato, cool-down and sprinkles

It’s amazing what an effect one day of cooler temperatures can have on me. I think one of my tomatoes may be staging a comeback and I feel like that’s because it’s 6 p.m. and it’s only 76 degrees. Amazing how good 76 degrees feels at that time of day after being used to it being in the upper 90s. And did I mention it’s sprinkling, too? Continue reading
