2015_Day 321: Headlight law makes little sense

I don’t know about you, but I tend to side with the “better safe than sorry” adage when it comes to turning on my car headlights. The sun has already risen when I go to work at 7 a.m. these days, but it’s not fully light out yet and I’d rather have people see me on the road. Continue reading

2015_Day 320: Fall leaf color surprise

There isn’t a lot of fall leaf color when it comes to our area of central Texas. At least I haven’t seen a lot of it. So I was surprised to see the reds on one of the trees in our front yard. Continue reading

2015_Day 319: Patience pays off in pink and red fall flowers

I’m becoming a big fan of geraniums and begonias. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always thought they were pretty flowers, but for some reason I didn’t always think they were for me. They were staples in many gardens I saw growing up, but I just didn’t seem to have much luck with them. I probably didn’t have enough patience to weather the season with them, neglecting them either by not watering enough when it was hot or not deadheading them. Eventually, I’d just give up and relegate them to the trash. Continue reading

2015_Day 318: It’s turning orange!

It’s been dark by the time I’ve gotten home from work the past few nights, so I haven’t been able to check out my pumpkin. So I was pleasantly surprised this morning to see a little orange creeping into the bold green. Continue reading

2015_Day 317: When is it OK to put up outside Christmas decorations?

I rarely get in the Christmas spirit before December, but this year I already feel like shopping for outside decorations. I think it’s because it’s so much easier to put up outside decorations in central Texas compared to Wisconsin. Continue reading

2015_Day 316: Throwback to flowers of June

I’m in a reminiscing state of mind the past few days. About my flowers, that is. We had a great spring and summer and I am happy and satisfied with the performance of the flowers I planted. From the cosmos to the zinnias to the petunias to the marigolds, they all served their purpose– to brighten up my back yard, and in turn, my day. Many of my days. Continue reading

2015_Day 315: Wordless Wednesday

Well, almost wordless. Wednesday feels like a flower day. A day to show off the bright oranges, pinks and, yes, greens that still grace the back yard. Continue reading

2015_Day 314: Ban on soccer headers a start

As a mom of a soccer player, I’m always worried about injuries. Especially head injuries. So I was encouraged to hear that the United States Soccer Federation today banned headers by its youngest players. Headers will not be allowed by players younger than 11 and 11- to 13-year-old players won’t be able to head the ball in practice. Continue reading

2015_Day 313: A spice-y Monday

Yet more things the rain has been good for — the basil and the chives in my garden. I thought both had finished for the season, but not yet. There’s no telling how long they will last, but it looks like I’ll be able to dry more of both for winter seasonings. Yum!

2015_Day 312: Sunday snapshots

A red tomato in mid-November? Who woulda thunk it? Certainly not me, although I’ll take it. The little red beauty is on one of my fall tomatoes. There are about a half-dozen fruit on the three plants, Continue reading
