2015_Day 51: Friday nights, my how they’ve changed

The lights at soccer stadiums are how I spend most Friday nights.

The lights at soccer stadiums are how I spend most Friday nights.

I remember, and it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago, when Friday nights meant going out on the town with friends or the start of a road trip to visit a close friend in another city. And then a night on the town. Continue reading

2015_Day 50: My daughter is independent and I miss her

imageI’m proud to say I’m raising a daughter who is independent, outgoing, determined and confident. Despite leaving her friends of 15 years and moving across the country, she has adjusted well, made lots of new friends she adores and loves her new school. I’m really happy for her.

At the same time, I miss the girl who used to love spending more time with me, whether it was just talking, watching TV together (“Dancing With The Stars” was our thing for quite a few years), cooking or shopping. Yes, we still do spend some time together but not nearly as much as we used to. And I get it, because she’s a teenager, and she wants to have fun with her friends. I’m happy she’s got so many friends.

But lately it’s been been making me think about when she leaves for college, and how empty the house will be without her. I used to think I couldn’t wait until all the kids were out of the house — how nice it would be to be empty-nesters. But with husband working nights and me on days (and neither schedule likely to change), I’m faced with the fact that most nights it will be just me and darn dog Chloe.

And that makes me kind of sad.

2015_Day 49: Is Fredericksburg worth the trip?

Several times since we moved to Texas, people have suggested that a visit to Fredericksburg is a must. Between its wineries, antiquing and German heritage, there’s something for everyone, the word is. Continue reading

2015_Day 48: Will I have Spring lettuce? Jury’s still out

IMG_1060Three days after I thinned my lettuce plants, I think it’s growing. At least it looks like it, if you closely compare left and right sides in photo with this post. Continue reading

2015_Day 47: I wish I could learn faster

At my last job, I was the expert. I had worked at the same place for 16 years and had tons of institutional knowledge. I was the one people asked when they had a question about how a publishing system worked, or why it didn’t work the way it was expected to. At my new job, which I started last week, I’m the newbie learning all new programs along with different ways of doing things. Continue reading

2015_Day 46: Ready, set, Spring!

Oodles of tomato plants now can be found at local stores, a sure sign spring gardening is just around the corner.

Oodles of tomato plants now can be found at local stores, a sure sign spring gardening is just around the corner.

I feel bad for my family and friends in Wisconsin who are having to endure another round of brutally cold temperatures. February was always the hardest month for me when I lived there. Even though the shortest month of the year, February seemed to go on forever in Wisconsin, seemingly no end in sight from snowstorm after snowstorm or frigid temperatures. Many times both. And it was always dark. Dark when I went to work. Dark when I came home from work. Just depressing. Continue reading

2015_Day 45: Lettuce thinning complete, finally

It was a beautiful Saturday to thin the lettuce, which I have been meaning to do for a couple weeks now. A lot of sun and 75 degrees, it felt glorious to be doing garden work in mid-February. Continue reading

2015_Day 44: Good service at the DMV? That’ll be the day

Seriously, do you know anyone who has ever gotten good service at a local Department of Motor Vehicles center? Over the years, husband and I have had our share of frustrating visits in numerous states, but one this week takes the cake. Continue reading

2015_Day 43: Yay for Amy’s Ice Creams!

imageWent to a very cool (pun intended) ice cream place Wednesday night — Amy’s Ice Creams on Burnet Road in north Austin. Great atmosphere. The friendly people of Texas just keep on coming. My friend and I got our ice cream and when we went to pay, the young lady behind the cash register smiled at us and said, “Our credit card machine isn’t working tonight, so if y’all don’t have cash, your ice cream is on me!” Continue reading

2015_Day 42: Warm weather helping lettuce

Lettuce on Feb. 11.

Lettuce on Feb. 11.

The unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve been blessed with this week are helping the lettuce. Woo-hoo! The leaves are finally starting to look more like lettuce, so I’m hopeful. And maybe one night this week, if I can get home before 9 p.m., or this weekend for sure, I’ll thin it out a bit (as suggested by a few folks).
