As a mom of a soccer player, I’m always worried about injuries. Especially head injuries. So I was encouraged to hear that the United States Soccer Federation today banned headers by its youngest players. Headers will not be allowed by players younger than 11 and 11- to 13-year-old players won’t be able to head the ball in practice. Continue reading

2015_Day 310: There’s no place like the couch… and cookies
Finally, five weeks after back surgery, darn dog Chloe is back with a vengeance. Back sitting on the couch, back chasing birds and passersby outside. Back to her old shenanigans inside the house, too. Twice in the last week, we’ve come home to find something that was supposed to be on the counter on the floor, empty and/or in pieces. Continue reading
2015_Day 299: Mickey the pumpkin
Yes, it’s a little late, but we finally got a couple pumpkins carved for Halloween. Well, daughter did the carving, but it got done. She found a Mickey Mouse pattern, drew it on, then carved away! I think she forgot how tiring it can be because she decided to freehand the second pumpkin, which is still being worked on as I write this. Continue reading
2015_Day 298: A wellness update
If darn dog Chloe had her way, she’d be back to her old ways, sleeping on daughter’s bed, jumping up on the couch and running around the back yard, barking at the neighbor dogs out for their daily walks. Three and a half weeks after having surgery to alleviate a bulging disc in her spine, you’d be hard-pressed to notice anything wrong with her if it wasn’t for the strip of shaved hair on her back. Continue reading
2015_Day 293: Class rings, letter jackets and (gasp) colleges

It’s only two months into daughter’s junior year, and it’s quickly becoming the most exciting year for her. She wasn’t but a week or so into the school year when she brought home an order form for a letter jacket. She surprised me when she said she wanted one because I always thought she considered them silly. Continue reading
2015_Day 288: Look Ma, no staples!

Fifteen days after having back surgery for a bulging disc, darn dog Chloe got her staples out today. All 13 of them. It’s hard to believe how much she has improved since then. She definitely seems like her old self, full of energy and raring to go. Continue reading
2015_Day 280: The tail, she wags!
Came home from work today to find darn dog Chloe able to wag her tail. She either hasn’t wanted or been able to since back surgery to relieve a bulging disc near her rear end/tail. But today, a week after she came home from the doggie hospital, she’s wagging it like crazy. Continue reading
2015_Day 277: Darn dog Chloe on the mend

Four days after having back surgery to relieve a bulging disc, our sweet dog Chloe appears to be on her way to recovery. There’s a lot of sleeping, especially in the hours after taking Tramadol, a pain medication. Continue reading
2015_Day 274: It’s not her time

When our dog, whom I affectionately call darn dog Chloe, hurt her back almost two weeks ago, we thought a treatment of Prednisone and pain killers would have her feeling better in no time. It did when something similar happened a year ago. And everything seemed to be going fine. Several days after taking the steroids, she seemed a lot better. She was moving better, she was eating and drinking. She even jumped up on the bed one night when we weren’t watching. Then the weekend hit. Continue reading
2015_Day 269: Darn dog Chloe’s darn back problems

What a difference a week makes. Last Sunday, daughter and I were in emergency pet care with Chloe, our beagle/Australian cattle mix dog who was having severe back problems. So severe that her whole body shook and she winced every time she tried to sit or lie down. Continue reading
