2015_Day 263: Crape myrtle still flowering

“Hey, I see your bush is finally blooming,” husband said this weekend after cutting the grass. “Bush?” I asked him. “You mean the crape myrtle in the back yard? It’s had flowers on it off and on for a month now.” Continue reading

2015_Day 262: Thank you flowers

So much for a fall tomato crop — at least any that were grown from seed. A week after I transplanted them from pots into the garden, they are looking pretty sad. Continue reading

2015_Day 261: Early summer rain did in onion crop

My onion harvest on Sept. 18, 2011.

My onion harvest on Sept. 18, 2011.

I was looking at the memories section of my Facebook page today and was reminded of the beautiful crop of onions I harvested from my garden in 2011. They were white onions and they were big and flavorful. If I remember correctly, they lasted into December and provided an added seasoning for many meals. Continue reading

2015_Day 260: Pumpkin progress?

Wanda, my wandering pumpkin, continues to stretch out. She’s started trailing onto the grass, so I suppose I’ll have to try to train her to grow back into the raised bed soon. If I can’t, husband probably won’t like to mow around her.

How could he not like her, though, with her cute little pumpkins?

2015_Day 259: Tomatoes finally transplanted

I don’t know whether they’ll grow, but I finally got my fall tomatoes transplanted into the raised bed. There are three of the bigger variety, and those seem to have the best chance to grow. There are also three cherry tomato plants, but those were pretty much just stems when I moved them from pots to the raised bed. Continue reading

2015_Day 257: Pumpkin may be victim to squash vine borer

On the same day I spotted the first tiny little pumpkin growing on Wanda, my first-born fall pumpkin plant, I also discovered what I think must be the work of a squash vine borer. Continue reading

2015_Day 255: Seeing beauty in all stages of a flower’s lifecycle

I haven’t deadheaded any of my flowers lately because, well, I like to look at them through all stages of life. I know some of the zinnias and other flowers are all dried up. But I’ve watched them for weeks on end now, from being tiny seedlings to little buds to full flowers. So I think it’s only right that I keep a few of the “gray-haired” ones around, too! Continue reading

2015_Day 254: Pepper plant productive, just not pretty

The pathetic-looking pepper plant in my garden continues to produce tiny little peppers. I counted at least 13 little fruit on the plant, and there are more flower blossoms, too. Continue reading

2015_Day 253: More pumpkin flowers

Today I had a few minutes to check out the garden before work, and it was nice to see a lot of pumpkin flowers open. Also noticed that Wanda is expanding beyond the borders of the raised bed. Cosmo, the other pumpkin, is a lot smaller than Wanda, but he does have a flower or two.

When I got home tonight, I moved Wanda so she’s trailing inside the bed, but I’m guessing it won’t be long before she stretches out again. She’s definitely a pumpkin without borders, although I suppose that’s what pumpkins do, right?

Rain update: An hour after I posted last night about waiting for the rain, we actually did get a small shower. Less than a half-inch, but at least it’s something. There are more rain chances yet tonight and again tomorrow, but they’re really spotty.

2015_Day 250: Reflecting on our first year in Texas

There was a lot of unpacking to do after a cross-country move.

There was a lot of unpacking to do after a cross-country move.

It’s hard to believe we’ve lived in Texas a full year now. So much has changed for all of us. New jobs for me and my husband, and new school for daughter. New friends all around. I had no idea what to expect when we moved here, and some things have been easier than others.
