2015_Day 314: Ban on soccer headers a start

As a mom of a soccer player, I’m always worried about injuries. Especially head injuries. So I was encouraged to hear that the United States Soccer Federation today banned headers by its youngest players. Headers will not be allowed by players younger than 11 and 11- to 13-year-old players won’t be able to head the ball in practice. Continue reading

2015_Day 313: A spice-y Monday

Yet more things the rain has been good for — the basil and the chives in my garden. I thought both had finished for the season, but not yet. There’s no telling how long they will last, but it looks like I’ll be able to dry more of both for winter seasonings. Yum!

2015_Day 312: Sunday snapshots

A red tomato in mid-November? Who woulda thunk it? Certainly not me, although I’ll take it. The little red beauty is on one of my fall tomatoes. There are about a half-dozen fruit on the three plants, Continue reading

2015_Day 311: And then there were tomatoes

It’s the third consecutive Saturday that we’ve had rain. And the last few days have been on the cool side. So I didn’t expect much when I looked at the garden today. I certainly didn’t expect to see two several-inches-high tomatoes growing in the same raised bed that pumpkin Cosmo has taken over. Continue reading

2015_Day 310: There’s no place like the couch… and cookies

Finally, five weeks after back surgery, darn dog Chloe is back with a vengeance. Back sitting on the couch, back chasing birds and passersby outside. Back to her old shenanigans inside the house, too. Twice in the last week, we’ve come home to find something that was supposed to be on the counter on the floor, empty and/or in pieces. Continue reading

2015_Day 309: The clouds after the storm

Okay, so it wasn’t much of a storm. Central Texas has had its share of rainy, stormy weather lately, but aside from some light rain Thursday morning, this storm wasn’t. Which is fine because we’ve had enough flooding to last awhile. Continue reading

2015_Day 308: Gadzooks, more ganzanias

Another flower in my flower beds that doesn’t seem to want to let go of summer is the gazania. I planted these on a whim, along with some yellow poppies. The gazanias were late bloomers compared to the zinnias, cosmos and marigolds, but they’ve continued to stay green. Continue reading

2015_Day 307: Today wasn’t Wednesday?

Yikes! I was writing the title for this post when it hit me. “Today isn’t Wednesday, is it?” I asked daughter. “Nope,” she answered, unaware that I was really serious. Had I really gone through the entire day acting as though it were Wednesday? Continue reading

2015_Day 306: Can I grow raspberries?

Growing raspberries was really easy in Wisconsin. Of course, it helped that my garden sat on what used to be a cow pasture. It had all the natural fertilizer it needed. Here in central Texas, however, I’m not sure it will be that easy. I certainly don’t have the space I once had, and the weather obviously is much different. Continue reading

2015_Day 305: Rain good for seed sprouting

A couple weeks ago, I vaguely recall spreading zinnia seeds left from dried zinnias in my flower beds in the raised beds by my fall tomatoes and pumpkins. And with all the rain that’s fallen in the past 10 days, a bunch of them are now sprouting. Continue reading
