I had to take a photo (above) of my blooming flower bed on Saturday in all its winter glory. I’m glad I did. The mercury dipped some 20 degrees in 15 minutes this morning, and with at- or below-freezing low temperatures predicted for at least the next week, the flowers’ beauty is probably short-lived. 2015_Day 360: New Christmas candies a hit
Pinterest continues to be my favorite place to find new recipes for any occasion. Christmas this year was no different, as Pinterest provided me with several recipes that really have been a hit. The candy most-liked by family, friends and co-workers is a melt-in-your-mouth piece of heaven called Salted Chocolate Toffee Pretzel Bark. Five easy ingredients probably already sitting on your pantry shelves or in your fridge: pretzels, chocolate chips, brown sugar, butter and salt. Blogger Mel (melskitchencafe.com) is absolutely correct when she calls this “some of the most addictive faux-candy known to man.” Seriously, I dare you to eat just one piece. Continue reading
2015_Day 359: No war, no fear, just love and much cheer
So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young Continue reading
2015_Day 358: Christmas Eve treats
With husband and daughter both working this Christmas Eve, I decided to finish baking my holiday treats. Actually, I got most of it done last weekend, but the one thing I didn’t get to was a family favorite — Mint Bars. Continue reading
2015_Day 357: When life gives you lemons…make tacos!
This story is just too good not to pass along. Seems like a burglary of a taco place in Las Vegas was videotaped. In my previous life as a news website editor, we got our share of footage from police agencies showing crimes in progress. The hope, of course, was that enlisting the public’s help would aid in catching the bad guys. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. But I digress. Continue reading
2015_Day 356: December gold
Last night’s sunset was unbelieveable and one that I thought might just be the most beautiful one yet since we moved to central Texas 15 months ago. Then this morning I just happened to look at the “On This Day” feature on my Facebook page and saw the beaut that graces the top of this post. Continue reading
2015_Day 355: Just add ice (cubes)
Have you ever watered a plant with ice cubes — on purpose? I haven’t until this weekend, when I watered my newest addition, an anthurium. It’s a beautiful, inexpensive plant that’s perfect for Christmas. Continue reading
2015_Day 354: Maybe it’ll just melt away?
I like to take on artsy-crafty projects, but that doesn’t mean I’m always good at them. My pumpkin snowman is a good example of a recent craft fail. While the intent was good, it just didn’t come together for me the way I wanted it to. The idea was pretty simple: Paint three pumpkins white, then stack them, draw on a face, and and a scarf and a hat. Continue reading
2015_Day 353: Christmas colors
When we decided to go with a much smaller Christmas tree this year, we had a lot of extra ornaments. But I wanted to find a way to use them since they’re so colorful. So, I just found a basket and filled it up with them. Turns out it really helps make the house festive-looking. Plus we don’t have to deal with the plastic or wire ornament hooks! Continue reading
2015_Day 352: I challenged the chicken lane and lost
See that traffic lane between the yellow lines? It’s called a center turn lane and it should be used only when a driver is ready to make a left turn. It should not be used as a driving lane. I repeat, you should only use it to get out of the busy lane of traffic when you want to make a left turn. Should be common sense, right? Well, yes, if common sense was a requirement to have a driver’s license. But apparently it’s not, and that’s how many accidents occur. Continue reading
